Lately a number of people have been complaining about the the fact there is only one user currently allowed to add video content to pages. Previously this was never an issue, people seemed fine with just Hero adding videos. But it seems many people from the community want a bit of a change. So i have started this forum post to gauge the communities opinions.

Please can you use either one of these templates at the start of your response followed by your reason, so the results can be easily tallied. {{Support}} {{Oppose}} {{Neutral}}. Just copy paste the one you want to use.

If you don't add a reason, your input won't be included. This is to help prevent people trying to rig the vote.

This issue is not closed and opinions can still be added

Should we allow more users to add video content?

Oppose Section

Symbol oppose vote oversat Oppose -Our wiki has already went through this before. We have already discussed this and voted on it long before any of you were admins. The issue is closed. When asked if you wanted to be an admin you were told in advance this is how the wiki is run and agreed to that ahead of time. saying that users leave our wiki for the officail one because they cant post videos is untrue because the official wiki doesnt allow any videos at all. you are banned if you add them.

reasons we stopped the video war and i will contnue to handle the videos.

  • Allowing more than one person to handel the videos led to hundreds of edits a day where users removed other peoples videos and posted their own back and forth over and over.
  • the users posting made no effort to promote the wiki
  • the users didnt have the thumbnail feature on youtube. so you can end up with any type of image for the video
  • the content was of low quality. no eperiance making videos.
  • the users have made no edits to the wiki only edits are videos ( the patch 1.0.6 i made very single edit to the wiki when it was locked to keep as afloat updated every single content item form the patch and made every single page. when a new patch comes out i do most of the page creation and recipies.)

We have already went through this on our wiki the issue is closed i have a few youtubers who make videos who have the thumnail feature and make good quaility content and when other content is needed they are who we will go to. there is not a vote on this issue because we already have and all admins are told about this many times and are very aware with the situation prior to becomming admins.

Gracey this does seem very personal saying that its not because people are leaving to go to the other wiki that has less traffic and doesnt even support videos is a joke. the thousands that have came to the wiki that i have brought here from youtube offset that im sure.

furthermore wikia staff member tae kim and me were talking and they liked how the video was done so well on our wiki they were talking about taking me on a video intern and having me do video for many wikis. they see the benifit and how much it has helped the wiki. being concerned about a couple of people who are mad because they dont get to post bad quality video with no thumbnails and do no work on the wiki whos videos dont ever link back to the wiki is a waste of effort this issue is closed. because weve already delt with it HeroGaming 16:19, January 28, 2012 (UTC)

You don't link to the wiki from any of your videos that I've checked. 3ICE 16:46, January 28, 2012 (UTC)
I don't think people should be able to post videos freely, maybe have a section on the wiki that is dedicated to fan made videos that would have to be approved first.

Support Section

Symbol support vote Support - I believe we could do with more users adding videos as, many of the current ones have incorrect information and its a bit much to expect one person to be able to keep them all up to date. Additionally it seems a bit unfair that users can't add a certain type of content to pages, since wikis are meant to be a place where people can freely add things. I think it would also be good to have different users as they often look at the same thing but from a different angle, which adds interest in my opinion. Symbol support vote Support - I too would like to see more users be able to add videos. As far as youtube is concerned, I like many of Hero's videos. I'm also a fan of Yrimir and have watched some of TerrariaHelp's videos. I absolutely love the TotalBiscuit and Jesse Cox Play Terraria series as well as their new series, The Next World Generation! I would like to see some these guys videos here on the wiki, as their videos can be both informational and entertaining. Hero has some youtube partners, but I would like to form a partnership with the wiki and these guys directly (i.e. not as youtube partners with Hero, but as partners with us, the wiki), to see if they're open to having their videos here.

Additionally, I think it's kind of unfair to have predominantly Hero's videos on this public wiki, unless that's what the community wants. However, that policy makes some sense too because historically people would add poor quality videos or remove other users videos. For this reason, I'm not sure if I support having everyone be able to add videos--except on blogs, everyone should be able to add their own videos to their own blog. Maybe we can create some kind of review process to ensure that good videos by others can make it onto content pages. But primarily, I would like to see some of these other popular youtubers' (in addition to Hero) videos on the wiki. Sincerely,
Mathmagician ( talk blog ) 08:41, January 28, 2012 (UTC)

Symbol support vote Support - HERO is maybe the important man of the forum and he have's his own gamechannel. but that isnt a excuse for making all the video's on the wiki. but if u want to post a video on the forum it needs to be asked to all admins if its good enough.

Symbol support vote Support - Hero had a monopoly on adding videos to this wiki for long enough. I think it is high time we let other people start contributing as well. Among the first videos to be accepted should be Yrimir's White whale (4.5 platinum/hour farm)
There are many youtube channels out there that have covered Terraria in the past: demilogic, PaperBatVG, captnduck, paulsoaresjr, TotalBiscuit, OMFGCata, TobyGames, just to mention a few. And of course the three favorites: Yrimir, TerrariaHelp and HERO. They, and others, should all be invited to make short, informative videos about all the items and features available in Terraria.
And with competition comes improvement. Hero will have an incentive to bring his outdated videos up to date faster if his videos come under the risk of being replaced by someone else's.
But we should keep in mind that change is often painful. Much grief will be had if people just start redoing and replacing every video of Hero. Soon we will be fighting over the top video spot on each article, and there will be edit warring between the fans and haters of our youtube celebrities. Even worse, we will be getting videos for every page. Would you like to watch the one minute short: "Terraria - Dirt Block"? Yeah, me neither.
Hero is quite young, I fear he will be tempted to misuse his admin power if he feels threatened in his made up position of video admin. He has already demonstrated that he can be quite tyrannical over at the starhawk wikia. (User_blog:HeroGaming/Admin_rights and his talk page is sprinkled with unban requests.) And that kind of behavior could result in him being demoted here. We wouldn't want to lose him over this.
We need quality control and a fair way of sharing the youtube revenue across all interested parties. Hero's monopoly was a comfortable solution until now, because nobody dared challenge an admin. But people are starting to leave the website over this issue, so we must act. 3ICE 16:46, January 28, 2012 (UTC)

If you don't have an opinion but you would like to make a suggestion, can you please use this section.

How about a radical change? I propose the removal of every video from the wiki. I know I never watch them here. If I want to see a video, I go directly to YouTube. 3ICE 16:47, January 28, 2012 (UTC)

Thats an idea, but i think too many people like them. A way you could fix this is by using adblock and block all youtube videos until your on youtube. Adblock is very easy to use and its very little effort to add/remove the filter. Gracey91 (talk contribs count) 16:56, January 28, 2012 (UTC)
