Retinazer Trophy "This is going to be a terrible night..." Spazmatism Trophy

The Twins are a Hardmode Mechanical Boss which is essentially a harder version of the Eye of Cthulhu. The Twins are two separate flying entities connected by a tendril, each with its own attack pattern and life count. Both must be killed in order to defeat the boss.

The Twins are summoned using the Mechanical Eye at night, and must be defeated before dawn, otherwise they despawn. If an Altar has been destroyed, they also have a chance of spawning on a random night if they have not been defeated yet. Their approach is signaled at dusk via the chat message, "This is going to be a terrible night..."

How can The Twins be summoned in Terraria? toggle section
In Terraria, The Twins can be summoned using a Mechanical Eye. However, they can also spawn naturally once a Demon or Crimson Altar has been destroyed, as long as they haven't been defeated at least once in the current world. If they spawn this way, their arrival is announced by the status message 'This is going to be a terrible night...'. Remember, The Twins must be defeated before dawn, otherwise they will flee and despawn.

What are the attack patterns of Retinazer and Spazmatism in Terraria? toggle section
In Terraria, The Twins, Retinazer and Spazmatism, have unique attack patterns. Retinazer, the eyeball with the red iris, fires high-velocity Eye Lasers and usually tries to stay diagonally above the player. Spazmatism, the eyeball with the green iris, fires medium velocity balls of Cursed Flame and typically tries to stay horizontally in line with the player. Both alternate between their signature ranged attacks and charging melee attacks. When their health dips to 40%, each eye transforms. Retinazer becomes a mechanical eye with a laser cannon, firing red Death Laser projectiles and ceasing its attempts to ram the player. It fires more rapidly and with higher damage, and periodically fires in quick barrages. Spazmatism transforms into a mechanical mouth that chases the player, charging with greater speed and range, and periodically spews solid streams of cursed flames.

What is the connection between The Twins and the Eye of Cthulhu in Terraria? toggle section
In Terraria, The Twins are essentially a more challenging, cybernetic version of the Eye of Cthulhu. They are two separate entities, Retinazer and Spazmatism, connected by a tendril. Each has its own attack pattern and life count, and both must be defeated to conquer the boss. The Twins can be summoned manually using a Mechanical Eye at night, similar to how the Eye of Cthulhu is summoned. They also have a chance to spawn naturally at dusk once a Demon or Crimson Altar has been destroyed, as long as they have not yet been defeated at least once in the game.

Attacks

  • Retinazer: has an orange-red iris and fires purple
  • few
  • a
  • feawo[fje
  • ajfeiwjoa
  • pfewaje
  • wasers. It will usually attempt to remain vertically above the player.
  • Spazmatism: has a green iris and fires balls of Cursed Flame. It will usually attempt to remain horizontally inline with the player.

Both alternate between their signature attacks and a charging melee attack, much like the Eye of Cthulhu. Retinazer's charge attack is faster and covers a bit more distance than Spazmatism's charge attack.

Each eye has a second form. Retinazer transforms at 8000HP while Spazmatism transforms at 9000HP.

  • Retinazer becomes a mechanical eye with a laser turret in its pupil. It fires more rapidly and with higher damage, and periodically fires in quick barrages. The barrages become more intense the more damage Retinazer takes. In its second form, Retinazer will only shoot at the player(s) and no longer attempt to ram into them.
  • Spazmatism becomes a mechanical mouth. It chases the player, charging with greater speed and range, and periodically spews streams of Cursed Flames from its mouth in a manner similar to the Flamethrower. The flames can inflict the Cursed Inferno debuff and deal high damage.
  • In Expert mode, Retinazer's laser firing become faster and charges become farther as his health goes down. Spazmatism's fireballs inflict Cursed Inferno for a longer length of time; sixteen seconds compared to eight.
  • Overall, the Spazmatism is stronger than it's component.

Achievements

Achievement Buckets of Bolts Buckets of Bolts is the achievement you earn for defeating The Twins, The Destroyer, and Skeletron Prime for the first time (Template:Pc icon only).

Achievement Mecha Mayhem Mecha Mayhem is the achievement you earn for defeating the three Mechanical Bosses in one battle together (Template:Pc icon only).

Achievement Ophthalmologist Ophthalmologist is the achievement you earn for defeating The Twins for the first time (Template:Console icon only).

Notes

  • If The Twins are summoned with a Mechanical Eye on a night where The Twins naturally spawn, both pairs will appear and all four eyes will be connected.
  • Both eyes can drop their respective trophy when killed, regardless of which is killed first or last. It is possible to get both trophies in one battle.
  • In its second form, Spazmatism's eye fire functions almost identically to the Flamethrower weapon, with similar range and damage but inflicting the Cursed Inferno debuff instead of On Fire!.
  • Defeating The Twins in the console version awards the 'Ophthalmologist' achievement.

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating The Twins, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:The Twins strategies.
  • In its first form, Spazmatism's flame shots often miss, even if the player isn't moving. The same goes for Retinazer's lasers in its second form.
  • Concentrate on killing Spazmatism completely first. Fighting them both in their second phases simultaneously makes the fight significantly more difficult.
  • Both of the Twins are vulnerable to the Frostburn and Ichor debuffs. As such, a viable combination is Frost Armor, a Megashark (if The Destroyer has been defeated), and Ichor Bullets.
  • In both of the Twins second form, using items like a Cross Necklace or having Titanium armor greatly helps take less damage by becoming invincible during most of their strong "Rapid Attacks"
  • If the Twins are ever out-run, such as with the case of a long railroad, they will despawn regardless of the time of night.
  • Both of the Twins are vulnerable to the Cursed Inferno debuff. Thus, in a two-player game, a player with Frost Armor and a player with Cursed Bullets can inflict both the Frostburn and Cursed Inferno debuffs, dealing effective damage over time.
  • When fighting the twins near your spawn point there is a small chance that out running them and dying/teleporting back to your spawn may cause one (presumably the farthest of the two from you) of the twins to despawn while keeping the one closest to you in game. This however is not a reliable method with which to combat the twins as trying to force this could result in both despawning, it is simply a lucky break one may have the fortune of coming across.

Trivia

  • Retinazer's name is a portmanteau of retina, a part of the eye, and laser. Spazmatism's name is a portmanteau of astigmatism, an eye disorder, and spasm, meaning to twitch uncontrollably.
  • The Twins are the only Mechanical Boss with phases, and is also the only mechanical boss that seems to be partially made of flesh, possibly being biomechanical hybrid.
  • They are the only boss which has two trophies.
