Strange Plants are a very rare variety of plants that are traded with the Dye Trader for different, animated dyes. When Traded in, the player receives three of the same kind of random dye (See Strange Plants quest). All plants can be found both on the surface and underground.

Acquiring a Strange Plant before the Dye Trader has moved in will fulfill one of his spawning requirements, the other being acquiring a dye-crafting item. Keeping both in the player's inventory, and having a suitable vacant House, will allow the Dye Trader to spawn during a subsequent morning.

Notes

• Strange Plants can grow on dirt, moss-covered stone, and every type of grass except mushroom grass.
• Strange Plants can also spawn on sky bridges in space.
• Strange Plants cannot grow within 480ft of each other.
• Like all other dye plants, Strange Plants will be highlighted while under the effects of a Spelunker Potion.
• Despite each plant being visually 2x3 tiles in size, they occupy only one tile and appear on the map as such.
• Unlike other dye plants found on the surface, strange plants can grow underwater.
• Strange Plants will spawn in worlds created before 1.3, though you may have to spend some time there before any grow.
• Strange Plant can be sold for 20 silver, but the dye that you obtain for the Strange Plant from the Dye Trader can be sold for 1 gold and 50 silver.
• Strange Plant can be acquired through smashing grass with a (golden)bug net

Trivia

• How the four strange plants are colored could possibly be a reference to the four Celestial Towers: Nebula, Solar, Vortex, and Stardust.
  • They could also be a reference to four biomes that have been in since release: Corruption, Underworld, Jungle and Purity.

Tips

• Since Strange Plants can grow on grass-less dirt, making a long, flat platform above the ground can be an effective method of farming them.
• An easy way to find Strange Plants is to go across the surface with the Spelunker Potion effect, as Strange Plants are highlighted with the buff.
• When running through caves, keep an eye for them, as they are commonly found inside hallowed caverns or lakes. Spelunker potion or glowstick is recommended as well.
