Plants are found all across Terraria, including several types of grass, mushrooms, cacti, herbs, thorny bushes, sunflowers, Seaweed, and more. Most of them can be harvested to collect itself or its seeds. Each biome has its own types of plants.
Grass
Grass enables many plants to grow on it, and covers most of the aboveground landscape. There are seven types of grass: Normal, Corrupt, Crimson, Mushroom, Jungle, Hallowed and Ash grass.

Moss
Moss is a grass-like plant that grows on Stone Blocks. It comes in 11 / 6 / 5 different colors, and one color can be found throughout each third of a given map (three colors per world), either randomly on cave surfaces or in moss chambers with a matching mossy wall. Mossy stone requires one more hit to break than clean stone. Moss will be destroyed if the Stone Block it is on converts to Ebonstone, Crimstone, or Pearlstone. Moss sprouts fuzz that can be cut like grass weeds.
On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, and tModLoader version, moss can be collected using a Paint Scraper or Spectre Paint Scraper. Only 11.11*1/9 (11.11%) of such moss will drop as an item when using either scraper, the rest will simply disappear as usual.[1] Collected moss can be placed on Stone Blocks and Gray Bricks, or used to craft mossy walls.
Lava Moss is a special variant of moss that can only be found in the lava layers of the Cavern, though if harvested, it can be planted at any level. Despite not being considered one of the glowing mosses, it glows in the dark.
Glowing mosses are special variants of moss that grow in glowing moss biomes in much larger areas than standard moss, and glow in the dark similarly to Lava Moss. There are five variants of glowing moss: Krypton (green), Xenon (blue), Argon (pink), Neon (violet), and Helium (color-changing) Mosses. Only one type of glowing moss can be found in each world, in a total of up to two (small world) / three (medium) / four (large) glowing moss biomes in the Cavern layer, mostly above the lava layers, but not under the spawn area.

Notes
- Strange Plants are able to grow on moss-covered stone blocks.
- Moss slowly spreads across exposed Stone Blocks and
Gray Bricks at any depth, once planted (including above ground). If the player does not have access to a Paint Scraper to collect moss with, they can grow extra moss by building "bridges" of stone for existing moss to grow across. The Staff of Regrowth can be used on Stone Blocks to grow moss at any depth. The type of moss will vary depending on the proximity to other types of moss. As such, one can spread the Lava Moss from the cavern's lava layers all the way up to the surface.
Trivia
- The tooltip of the glowing mosses, 'A sight to dwell upon and never forget', is a quote by Morris Travers, an English chemist who worked with Sir William Ramsay in the discovery of xenon, neon, and krypton.
- The glowing mosses' colors do not accurately match the actual colors that such gases produce in real life when used in a gas-discharge lamp.
- In real life, argon glows purple (unless mercury vapor is added to make blue), neon glows red, helium glows white, and krypton and xenon both glow green.
- The colors of the glowing mosses (including Lava Moss) resemble the Lunar Fragments.
- During a Blood Moon, Krypton Moss changes its color to yellow and Xenon Moss to light pink. Argon Moss's color remains almost the same, however slightly tinted red.

Herbs
Herbs are plants used to craft potions. They can be found all across the world or in Herb Bags, and can be harvested with almost any weapon or tool. Each herb will bloom when certain requirements are met. Herbs harvested while blooming will drop 1–3 seeds of their kind in addition. Herbs appear randomly on their respective soil but can also be planted in that soil with their kind of seed.
Types
There are currently 7 different types of herbs. In addition to their natural soil, herbs can also be grown in Clay Pots, or within Planter Boxes. The Daybloom can also be dropped from Angry Dandelions.

Growth
Herb growth has three distinct stages:
- Sprout stage – A very small stump or bud of the plant is noticeably growing out of the ground. This stage can be observed at the moment when seeds are just sown. Trying to harvest the plant at this stage will yield neither a herb nor seeds (not even the seeds that were used to plant in the first place).
- Mature stage – The plant's vegetative parts show reasonable growth, and are quite noticeable. Flowers are absent, however. Harvesting at this point will yield a herb but no seeds. The player can however use the Staff of Regrowth at this stage to yield seeds, and may be favorable over waiting for the herb to bloom, but this cannot be done when they're planted on Planter Boxes
. - Blooming stage – This is characterized by the appearance of flowers (possibly with other secondary effects, such as sparks, glows, flashes of light, etc.) and will occur only when the required conditions are met. Weather or event-dependent blooming will last for the duration of these (e.g. Moonglow blooms at night and closes during the day). Generally, this is the best stage at which to harvest plants, as doing so will yield both a herb and its seeds. These seeds can be replanted to regenerate the supplies of herbs, or may be used to initiate farming (if their quantity is large enough).
Notes
- Herbs can grow anywhere in the world, as long as their respective soil is present. Since some soil types are more prevalent in certain biomes, the respective herbs will be found more often there as well. For instance, Snow and Ice Blocks make up the majority of the Snow/Ice biomes, hence Shiverthorn is going to be found there in large quantities.
- There is a "density" limit for naturally growing herbs: A new herb can only spawn on a block if there are fewer than five other herbs (of any type) within a 31×31-tile (small worlds) / 45×45-tile (medium worlds) / 61×61-tile (large worlds) rectangle centered on the block.[1]
- Herbs will never spawn on half-blocks or sloped blocks.
- A herb will bloom on every occasion which provides its blooming conditions, not just once. For example, Moonglow will bloom each time it is night, not just once.[2]
- Despite there being a Planter Box
for each herb, any Planter Box (and additionally Clay Pots) can be used to grow any herb, regardless of its type or what biome it is placed in. Using them also avoids the problem of swinging tools breaking nearby herbs. - Herb seeds are named after their herb, e.g. Blinkroot Seeds for Blinkroot. There are also plain Seeds that are ammunition for the Blowpipe. These latter Seeds cannot be planted.
- All herbs sell for 20, while their seeds sell for 16.
Tips
- Herb seeds can be used to create herb farms. A Dart Trap can be used to quickly harvest herbs growing on soil, however herbs growing in Clay Pots or in Planter Boxes
are harvested with a pickaxe or, for a better profit, a Staff of Regrowth or Axe of Regrowth.
Trivia
- The Daybloom is the only herb that can be dropped by enemies.

Vines
Vines | ||
---|---|---|
regular vine |
File:Jungle Vines.png jungle vine |
File:Hallowed Vines.png hallowed vine |
Vines can be seen hanging from Dirt Blocks if grass has spread there, or from Mud Blocks with Jungle Grass. In either case, there must be empty space below for the vine to grow (a Torch or a Wood Platform, for example, will block them). Vines can be cut easily with nearly any Weapon or Tool, as the whole vine will instantly be destroyed if the top piece of the vine or the block that the vine is hanging from are destroyed. If that cannot be done, a vine can be destroyed by getting hit by a pickaxe or having the block they are hanging from be latched to by a grappling hook. Vines block light, but do not impede movement.
Contrary to tall grass, vines do not require sunlight and will grow behind walls and underground.
Vines will never drop the Vine object; this is an uncommon Man Eater drop.
Note: Hallow vines will spread hallow, and crimson vines will spread the crimson.
Cacti
- Main article: Cactus
Cacti can be found in the Desert biome on sand. They can be chopped down, like trees, to receive Cactus. However, unlike trees, you can mine the sand from beneath them, which will destroy the cactus.
- As of patch 1.1, they no longer deal damage to players who touch them.
- Prior to 1.0.6, cacti destroyed blocks as they grew. Now, if a block is in the way of its growth, it will just stop growing.
Thorny bushes
Thorny bushes are plants that grow naturally in the Corruption and the Underground Jungle, like grass. Unlike grass though, Thorny Bushes will damage the player on contact. Currently, there are two types of thorny bushes: red bushes that grow in the Underground Jungle which deal 25 damage and purple bushes that grow in the Corruption that deal 10 damage. Thorny Bushes grow in all directions (not just upwards), and may spread. All NPCs and enemies are immune to them. They cannot be obtained as an item. The Corruption variant of Thorny Bushes spreads corruption, the Jungle variant, however, does not spread jungle grass. Thorny bushes cannot grow over or otherwise affect vines. Therefore, vines can prevent the propagation of Corruption across large gaps that would otherwise require careful maintenance. However corrupt bushes will convert jungle bushes in hardmode.
- As of patch 1.0.6, thorny bushes are now destroyed on contact with the player.
Sunflowers
- Main article: Sunflower
Sunflowers are found on grass on the surface. They are not only there for decoration, but they also stop corruption from spreading. You can pick them up by destroying the grass on the block under them with a pickaxe to receive a Sunflower. Sunflowers do not slow the spread of the Crimson.
Life Fruit
- Main Article: Life Fruit
Life Fruit are found only in the Jungle Biome. They can be collected by swinging a sword or pickaxe to destroy it like grass or thorns. Life Fruit are consumed for a permanent increase of 5 to a players maximum Health.
Dye Plants
Dye plants produce or transform into dye materials when harvested. They grow in various regions depending on the type of plant; see dye for more information where to harvest each one.
