Death is what happens when your character's health reaches zero. A message will be sent dependent on how you die. "<PlayerName> tried to swim in lava" is one that is sent if you die from lava damage, for example.
When a character dies, a Tombstone is dropped at the location of their death. It is inscribed, much in the way the sign functions, with how the character met his/her demise. Being affected by physics, it is possible for the Tombstone to "roll" after character death if the character was moving at the time.
If there is no flat 2-block space for a Tombstone, it will fade away.
Difficulty differences
A softcore character will drop half of the amount (rounded up) of each type of Coins your character is carrying at the moment of death. To avoid heavy financial losses upon death, be sure to often stash your cash in your Piggy Bank (or in a Chest, or other storage container if you don't have one yet).
A mediumcore character will drop all carried items onto the floor, including money and ammo. Any additional max health or mana is not lost.
Hardcore characters on the other hand, will drop all of their items upon death. The character is deleted on death and turns into a ghost, unable to interact with the environment, but still able to observe and chat with other players.
Death Messages
Default Death Messages
PvP Death MessagesPvP death messages will use the 'default' death messages, but will additionally state the name of the player's killer along with the weapon or projectile with which the killing blow was landed. For example: <PlayerName>'s face was torn off by <KillerName>'s Ball O' Hurt. Monster Death MessagesMonster death messages work like PvP death messages. For example: <PlayerName> was slain by <MonsterName>." |

Notes
- The text that appears after death saying "You were slain..." does not appear in the iOS and Android versions of the game.
- When you kill yourself by using something like Dynamite, you will re-spawn with full health.
- The "<PlayerName> was removed from <World name>." message will appear, even if the player isn't on hardcore.
- In Console, the "You were slain..." message will have a faded & translucent version of itself behind the opaque text that flickers around. (In like a constantly twitching motion)
- A few seconds after death, a ~5 second timer will activate before you respawn. This has advantages and disadvantages. The benefit to this is that you can pay attention to detail of where you died and/or how you died so you can re-locate your items or find out what killed you. The downside to this respawn delay is that if you're fighting a boss, even if you're fighting and killed near your spawn point, the delay is plentiful for the boss to escape.
- Even though it says Fixed you can still die of fall damage when entering a world/respawning (Confirmed on PC).
- The "watched their innards become outards" does not make sense if the death was caused by another creature, as it will say "<PlayerName> watched their innards become outards by <Monster>". However, the "by" may mean "beside" in this case.
Tips
- The tombstone mechanic can be very useful for relocating items/coins dropped after death, since the tombstone will usually fall within the vicinity of where you died.
