Guns

There are a variety of Guns available in Terraria with increasing levels of potency as more rare guns are acquired. The guns range from early to modern styles and designs, from the Flintlock Pistol to the Phoenix BlasterMegashark or the Chain Gun.

Some weapons are more coveted than others, despite being potentially heavy on your wallet. Some weapons, such as the Minishark with its devastating rate of fire of 7 rounds per second, can really pay off with their damage output and efficiency.

As of the 1.0.6 update, the total amount of ammunition available shows up underneath the gun, whether they be Musket Balls, Silver Bullets, Meteor Shot or even Sand, Snowballs and Fallen Stars for the Sandgun, Snowball Cannon and Star Cannon respectively. Guns that can use multiple types of ammunition will show a grand total of all available ammunition if more than one type is available in your Inventory.

Finding Guns

Some guns are easier to obtain than others. The pistol for example can be found in dungeon chests. Some guns, like the Clockwork Assault Rifle can only be obtained by defeating tough creatures in this case the wall of flesh. Still others (e.g., the Minishark, Flintlock Pistol or the Shotgun) can be bought from the Arms Dealer or other NPC vendors.

Terraria Musket

A fantastic early weapon is the Musket. For many players, it is the first firearm they obtain. It uses a minimal amount of bullets and offers a good knockback and fair damage, although its rate of fire is quite slow. It is probably one of the most accessible guns, being found by smashing Shadow Orbs in The Corruption. It is considered a must-have because it is one of the easiest weapons to find, thus causing the Arms Dealer to spawn. It will use all common forms of ammunition (Musket Balls or any variants crafted from them).

In worlds that have The Crimson in place of the Corruption, players will find obtaining their first weapon even easier. There are no chasms to fall all the way down and die from fall damage, being replaced by steep but easily traversed zigzagging tunnels. Destroying the Pulsating Hearts found within will often yield The Undertaker as the first drop, as well as some Musket Balls. It does less damage than the Musket, but has a higher rate of fire.

Ammunition

Most guns use Musket Balls or variations of this ammunition as well as bullets made from the Empty Bullet, but some use up the player's mana under sustained fire, and are thus generally considered a variant of Spells; such weapons deal Magic damage, as opposed to most guns, which deal Ranged damage. An example of a weapon that uses mana as a resource is the Space Gun that consumes 8 mana per shot. However, wearing a set of Meteor Armor will allow the Space Gun to fire infinitely without cost. Note that the Meteor Armor must be worn in the Equipment slots. You will not gain this ability while wearing it in the Social Slots.

Unique firearms have their own forms of ammunition, for example:

  • The Star Cannon uses Fallen Stars; not the easiest ammunition to come by, but its high rate of fire and damage may make the tradeoff worth it for some players.
  • The Snowball Cannon uses Snowballs, which are easily obtainable in large quantities — 10 Snowballs can be crafted from a single Snow Block. It has a high rate of fire, but does little damage compared to most firearms.
  • The Stynger uses Stynger Bolts as ammunition. Both the weapon and its ammunition are first obtained from the Golem. Thereafter, the ammunition can be bought from the Arms Dealer. It is a highly effective end-game weapon that, while doing less damage directly, causes a myriad of explosions with each shot that all do damage independently.
  • The Sandgun uses Sand Blocks as ammunition. The Sandgun can only be crafted, with 10 Antlion Mandible (Rare drop from Antlion), 5 Topaz, and the Illegal Gun Parts (obtained from the Arms Dealer for 25 )
  • Although, the Illegal gun parts must be bought for 75 in the android and iOS version of Terraria.

Area of Effect Guns

Area of Effect weapons (i.e., explosive guns) do damage in a predetermined area which will damage more than one enemy and (depending on the gun and the ammo type) sometimes even the terrain. The Proximity Mine Launcher, Grenade Launcher, Rocket Launcher and Stynger are all Area of Effect weapons (although the last causes multiple explosions instead of just one, being less predictable in the exact effect area).

It is worth noting, although some weapons have the word "gun" in them (i.e. Space GunBee GunRainbow Gun), they are not technically guns as they deal magic damage and are labeled as Spells regardless.
