The Nightmare Pickaxe is a tool that can mine most blocks and ores. It is one tier above the Gold Pickaxe and one tier below the Molten Pickaxe.

On blocks like dirt or clay, it digs at about 3.6 blocks a second, while with harder blocks like stone it digs at 1.9 blocks a second. It mines the hardest blocks, such as ebonstone, at almost 1 block a second. It can mine both Hellstone and Obsidian, unlike the Gold Pickaxe. However, it's incapable of mining Cobalt Ore, Mythril Ore and Adamantite Ore.

The Nightmare Pickaxe is one of the first items that a player will obtain that is both melee and gives off particles. The particles that a Nightmare Pickaxe gives off are close, if not the same, to the particles that are emitted from Demonite Ore or Shadow Orbs.
