Reforging
Comments577this wiki

Reforging is a feature introduced in the 1.1 update, and can be used to modify most weapons and accessories. Vanity items, armor, and special tools such as the Grappling Hook are unable to be reforged.
Purchasing a reforge from the Goblin Tinkerer applies better/worse stats (buffs) to the item being reforged, such as improving damage, increasing movement speed, improving the defense bonus for the item, and so on. However, possible modifications include bad ones that will make the item less desirable, such as making a weapon do less damage or have a slower firing speed. Accessories and Weapons have separate lists of possible buffs/debuffs, and different weapon types also have slightly different lists (range weapons can have improved firing speed, while melee weapons can have improved size which increases hit-range, while spells have reduced mana cost). Reforging an item chooses one buff/debuff from its applicable list at random. Multiple reforges on an item do not stack: reforging an item will overwrite any existing buff on the item. Items can be reforged many times with no penalty. Each buff/debuff has a name and color. The best buffs for weapons will apply 5 different buffs (examples below).
Note: Not every item is able to have every kind of prefix[1]. For example, the Magical Harp cannot have the "Mythical" prefix because the harp itself has no knockback. "Mythical" boosts knockback so it can't be on the harp.

Requirements
Edit
In order to reforge items, there are three different things that need to be obtained :
- Goblin Tinkerer (NPC villager)
- An amount of money, depending on the item's value. ( example: Standard Copper Shortsword =3.50 silver, Sunfury =3.70 gold). The cost is five times the sell value of the item.
- A weapon/accessory to reforge.

Melee Weapons (based off of Copper Shortsword)
Edit
Flails, spears, boomerangs, and chainsaws cannot be reforged above Godly due to stat restrictions. There is currently a glitch which does not allow you to reforge copper axes above Tier 2 (Green). The other axes (iron, silver, gold, demonite and the 2 hamaxes) however can be reforged to be legendary. The cobalt, mythril and adamantite drills cannot be reforged for size or knockback.

Magical Weapons (based off of Vilethorn)
Edit
The "Starfury" is counted as a magical weapon regarding the reforge process. The "Magical Harp" can not be reforged for increased knockback because it has no knockback before reforging.
Some weapons in the Positive Attributes will have Negative Percentages but this is due to these weapons costing mana to use (If they have, say, a reduced mana cost of "-17%" That is therefore good because you won't waste as much mana.)

Edit

Notes
Edit
- It's possible to create a starting character with a prefixed Copper Shortsword, Pickaxe or Axe. In fact, it is possible to create a new character who spawns with Legendary items.
- The "Deadly" prefix adds 5 stats to the Musket, improving damage (+9%), speed (+5%), critical strike chance (+2%), velocity (5%) and knockback (5%). This is probably a typo, as usually only the "Unreal" prefix adds 5 stats to a ranged weapon.
- Gungnir, at the moment, is the most expensive weapon in the game to reforge.

When using a language that isn't English, reforging an item may make the item disappear.
