The Shadow Scale is an item used to make the Nightmare Pickaxe and The Breaker, along with Shadow Armor.

The only way to obtain Shadow Scales is from battling the Eater of Worlds. It is not necessary to kill the Eater of Worlds completely because each section of the boss has a chance to drop this item. This drop will become useless once you reach the next tier.

You will need 56 Shadow Scales to craft all the items, 45 for the full armor set and 11 for the Nightmare Pickaxe and The Breaker.
