Dyes are mostly craftable items that can be placed in the Dye Slots of a player's Inventory to alter the colors of equipped Armor, Vanity items, and Accessories. The Dye Trader NPC sells the Dye Vat (5), and four dyes. The other Dyes must be crafted using the Dye Vat or obtained by trading in Strange Plants. Primary crafted Dyes can be further combined to craft shade, gradient, and patterned Dyes. There are currently 110Template:Pc icon / 65Template:Console iconTemplate:Mobile icon different dyes in the game (109/64 on single player worlds as Team Dye is not available).
To craft thirteenTemplate:Pc icon / eightTemplate:Console iconTemplate:Mobile icon of each Dye (one for each dye slot, including combination and compound dyes), it takes:

Basic Dyes
All dyes are crafted at the Dye Vat. Every raw dye material (not including Silver Dye and Brown Dye) can be found growing as an Object in the natural world or as a guaranteed drop from special enemies. The name of each material indicates the color of dye it is used to craft. This is a complete list of all 14 basic dyes, their materials, and how to obtain them.

Compound Dye
These dyes form patterns with multiple colors, applied as separate blocks depending on the shape of the item. All colored basic dyes can be combined with Black or Silver Dye to craft "<Color> and Black Dye" or "<Color> and Silver Dye", respectively:
Gradient Dyes
Advanced dyes created through more complex combinations of colors. Gradient dyes all add multiple colors to a dyed item, faded between them rather than flatly applied as with basic or compound dyes.
- Flame Dye - Red, Orange and Yellow Dye
- Blue Flame Dye - Blue, Sky Blue and Cyan Dye
- Green Flame Dye - Green, Yellow and Lime Dye
- Yellow Gradient Dye - Yellow, Orange and Lime Dye
- Cyan Gradient Dye - Cyan, Sky Blue and Teal Dye
- Violet Gradient Dye - Violet, Pink and Purple Dye

Strange Dyes Template:Pc icon
These unusual dyes are obtained by trading Strange Plants found in the world to the Dye Trader.
*Can also be purchased from the Dye Trader during a full moon for 375
Two of these dyes can be combined with certain materials at a Dye Vat to form new dyes.
- Gel Dye
+ Pink Gel(10) = Pink Gel Dye - Shifting Sands Dye
+ Crystal Shard(20) = Shifting Pearlsands Dye
Lunar Dyes Template:Pc icon
These animated dyes can only be crafted at a Dye Vat with 10 of each drop from the Lunar Event bosses, and a single Bottled Water.
- Nebula Dye
- Nebula Fragment - Vortex Dye
- Vortex Fragment - Stardust Dye
- Stardust Fragment - Solar Dye
- Solar Fragment - Void Dye
- Luminite Bar(5 Luminite)
Other Dyes
- Team Dye
- purchased from the Dye Trader on a server for 1. Changes to the team color if the player is in a multiplayer team. No effect otherwise. - Skiphs's Blood Template:Pc icon - A Developer item that can be obtained from Treasure Bags. Also obtained by trading Strange Plants found in the world to the Dye Trader.
- Loki's Dye

Notes
- All vanity items will benefit from dye, with the exception of the Familiar clothes. The colors shown when wearing Familiar clothes can be changed using a Dresser instead.
- Some dyes work with the Familiar Wig and will alter the color of the hair when applied. This effectively gives even more customization potential to player hair than was previously available.
- When transformed into a werewolf or a merfolk by Neptune's Shell, Moon Charm or Moon Shell, any dye placed in the Dye Slots will certainly color the werewolf or merfolk form's head, torso and legs as if they are Vanity items.
- The dye crafting materials found naturally-placed can be placed again manually by players (eg. as decoration). Green and Teal mushrooms as well as the Sky Blue Flower can be placed on any blocks. Blue Berries and Yellow Marigold require an area without background walls. Orange Bloodroot must be hung from the underside of any block. Lime Kelp must be submerged in liquid. Pink Prickly Pears require the top of a Cactus. Enemy-dropped dye crafting materials cannot be placed (Red/Cyan/Violet Husks, Purple Mucos, Black Ink).
- Basic and Combined Dyes only affect the hue of an armor's color, but not the saturation level (i.e. how vibrant the color is). This means that armor and clothing that are dull in color, such as Ninja Clothes, Necro Armor, and Reaper Costume are relatively unaffected by these dyes. Compound Dyes, however, override an armor's color completely, so they do not have the same problem.
- Some white/silver colored clothing items, such as the Mrs. Claus Heels, will not dye properly with a basic dye, but will take on the desired color when a combination that features Silver Dye is applied.
- Template:Console icon On Console version multiplayer , using the Magic Mirror while having dyes equipped can sometimes duplicate or completely remove the dyes from the player's dye slots.
- Template:Mobile icon Dyes seem to expire after some time, in the case of mobile.
- Template:Mobile icon Occasionally flame dyes don't appear.
- Template:Console icon It seems that all the dyes completely change the color, creating weird color mixes.
- Template:Pc icon It takes at least 170 Strange Plants to obtain 15 of each dye (3 dye per plant) reward for 13 dye slots (Likely much more, since obtaining many repeat rewards from the Dye Trader is common.)
- Template:Pc icon Dyes with a small blue orb in their icon have a unique animation.
- Template:Pc icon The lid of a dye container seems to indicate some things about the type of dye:
- A dark gray lid indicates basic dyes
- A silver lid indicates Bright dyes
- A blueish gray lid indicates multicolored/gradient dyes, with a deeper blue lid for Intense dyes
- A checkered lid indicates a compound dye, with dark being __ and black, light being __ and silver, and bluish being __ flame and black
- A green lid indicates glowing
- A gold lid indicates the dye is reflective
- A purple lid indicates animated dyes or other special effects
- A red lid is reserved for Team dye
Tips
- All dyes and items used to create them sell for 20, so a beginning character should pick them up whenever encountered to sell them even if they aren't interested in the dye itself.
