Hey guys, Dragon here bringing you a series of detailed guides concerning Terraria's bosses, which can be a little daunting if you don't know how to fight them properly. Since the outcome of a boss battle depends utterly on the preparation, I'll show you how to go about it.
For newer players, fighting the Eye of Cthulhu can seem a little scary, but it's a piece of cake once you get used to it. As long as you prepare the terrain and your weapons and armor, you won't even need potions.
If you just want to skip to the basics of how to fight it, see section The Fight.
Copper or iron armor is great for fighting the Eye of Cthulhu and will do the job. If you can, get Cactus, Silver or Gold/Platinum armor - the more defense the better.
Now, for accessories. I highly doubt you have the Goblin Tinkerer by this point, so reforging is impossible. Try to equip accessories that give defense or damage. If you have it, the Cloud in a Bottle or other double-jumping item can work wonders.
As for weapons, a bow will be your best friend. An Iron or Gold bow should be fine, loaded with Jester, Flaming or Frostbite arrows. If you have found the Ice Blade, this will help, but don't count on the missiles. Also, if you have any damaging pets, such as the Zombie, they will help a lot when the Eye charges at you. Despite the criteria for the EoC to spawn naturally (see below) about 150 health (around 10 hearts) will do. I beat the Eye with my friend on split-screen with even less than this, but multiplayer always makes a boss battle easier. If playing multiplayer, the health criteria will be lowered by about 25% depending on how many friends there are and how powerful.
Next, the arena. Since the Eye of Cthulhu must be spawned at night, you may be hassled by intervening Demon Eyes or Zombies. To overcome this, build a big box out of wood for the arena, lined with wood platforms for mobility. For resources, you will need about 150 wood and a stack or two of platforms. This arena can also work perfectly for other boss fights.
Now that you're more or less prepared for the fight, you need to be able to summon the boss. You can craft a Suspicious Looking Eye at a Demon or Crimson Altar out of six lenses. The Eye can also spawn naturally if the following criteria are met:
- the EoC has not been defeated in the world
- you have 200 health or more
- there at at least four NPCs in the world, including the old man at the dungeon
7:30pm is the absolute earliest you can spawn the Eye. This gives you about ten minutes to fight it, useful if you have high defense but low damage, or are more one for dodging than attacking. When you press left trigger when you are holding a Suspicious Looking Eye, you will hear a roaring sound and the message "Eye of Cthulhu has awoken!" will display, shortly followed by the eye. Knowing its AI and attack pattern is key to dodging and defeating it. In its first stage, the eye will hover seemingly idly around you while spawning Servants of Cthulhu, which will attack you. It also makes a few lunges occasionally.
When the Eye's health bar is halfway depleted, it will morph into its second form. When it is transforming, it will spin around rapidly for about four seconds. If this happens inside your box arena, it's a great time to start scoring some hits when it cannot attack you. Rapidly shoot it, or even hit it with your sword as it does not move apart from spinning and will make no attempt to attack you.
When it is done, its appearance as well as behaviour will have changed. Instead of a massive eyes, where the pupil and iris were in the first stage is now a huge, gaping mouth. The Eye is now much more aggressive, and will always follow you and lunge. It roars when it is lunging, giving you a split second to dodge. In this stage, it has increased attack, but now has no defense, so attack as much as you can. It has also stopped spawning servants.
Like with all bosses, the Eye will despawn when you die, so keep an eye on your health and use healing potions accordingly. There will be a period when it hovers above you, so shoot it then and dodge out of the way when it lunges.
Congratulations! Hopefully, after reading this, you have managed to defeat the Eye of Cthulhu. It drops 2-4 gold coins, Corrupt Seeds, Demonite Ore, and rarely an Eye of Cthulhu trophy. If you were playing on Expert mode, you will also have gotten an Eye of Cthulhu goody bag.
And this concludes this boss guide! Next in the series will be my guide on how to defeat the Eater of Worlds solo, so stay tuned for that.
Have a nice day further! :)
