Wire is a material that can be purchased from the Mechanic, is used both to craft various mechanical items (Pumps, Timers, Active Stone Blocks and Explosives), as well as making various traps and factories. Wire can only be placed with a Wrench and it can only be collected with Wire Cutters.

Wire serves the purpose of connecting various Pressure Plates and Switches to Timers, Statues and even interactive Wire. Wire can also be found naturally in different biomes, if you find a trap, you may use your Wire Cutters and collect the Wire.
